Yes I work in VR and it is (already) great

Back in the day, I was thrilled about the possibilities of VR – and I am still. However: I could not imagine that working in a VR could be a thing. Travel in VR? Yes. Gaming in VR? Yes. But just working?

It is probably not the most obvious thing (which is porn), but it is great fun and an excellent add-on to a working day at the desk, like going for a walk or working at the Starbucks or library.

The frameworks are getting better every day, and with the recognition of keyboards like Apple’s Magic Keyboard, even typing becomes more natural. Creating a PPT presentation is still less efficient but drawing on a whiteboard is amazing. Also, MS Teams meetings are already a great experience, as well as surfing the web and reading.

Here is my setup:

  • Oculust Quest 2
  • vSpartial (app) and Horizon Workspace
  • Apple Magic Keyboard
  • Surface 4

The Surface 4 is not recommended because the Oculus PC Software does not support the Intel Iris Xᵉ Graphics. Therefore, it is not possible to connect the Oculus Quest with a wire for better graphics.

I am looking forward to sharing more experiences.

Thank you London!

Mehrere Tausend Bahnkilometer liegen hinter uns. Strände, Städte, Museen, Theater, Festivals, Velotouren… Und das beste: Der Aufbau einer unglaublichen Community in der Nachbarschaft.

Wir fühlten uns hier so zu Hause wie man sich nur zu Hause fühlen kann. Vielen Dank London! You get out what you put in :)

Auf bald!

How to identify scams on Facebook marketplace

Here in London, the Facebook Marketplace works surprisingly good and is very popular for selling chairs, tables, plants etc. to neighbours. As the marketplace has no verification features it is a paradise for scams.

I spend a few hours with some of them to see how they behave and if they become more professional in the recent years.

In terms of grammar skills and writing chat messages the scammers are on a surprisingly high level compared to the „old fashion“ email scams. Also most of the fake sellers spend a lot of time convincing me to buy. With some I had chats with more then 30 messages.

Here is a popular fake selling pattern:
  • The scammer advertise gadgets like Nintendo Switch for cheap (but not super cheap).
  • They ask you to collect but they send you an address outside of London.
  • As option they offer you free/cheap shipping but with pre-payment.
  • You will never get the parcel.
A few simple tricks to identify scammers:
  • Pretend to be at the pick up address. They will come up with crazy ideas about why they are not at home.
  • Ask them to transfer you £10 after you transfer £10. They will refuse it.
  • Start a fake discussion about photos on their Facebook profile (good fun guaranteed)

What surprised me the most is the scammer use real Facebook profiles. Probably they are hacked but at the first sight, it looks like a real person is behind the ad.

Some conversions:

„Jane“ has no idea about her cover photo. When I told her I was in Barcelona once too she replayed how beautiful it is.
It is in Rome…

The fake profile

I cannot get into online banking

When I asked Jane to pay me £10 back she told me her online banking is not working. How would she see my full payment then?

My daughter is a home. She is 12.

When I told Kevin I am at the pickup location he told me his daughter is at home and I need to transfer the money.

In short: Stay alerted and never pay in advance :)

Convert any video to be compatible with GoPro Quik

GoPro Quik is a nice app to cut movies in no-time. For sure it does not replace Premier or similar but perfect if you like to share a cool video after a day filming the kids.
The app works with videos shot with the GoPro only. This is fine in 90% of the cases for me but sometimes I like to import movies shot with my Lumix or even mobile phone. Using ffmpeg no GoPro movies can be converted using the following command:

ffmpeg -i NAME.mp4 -map_metadata -1 -codec copy -metadata:s handler="GoPro AVC encoder" -metadata:s handler_name=" GoPro AVC" gopro-quick-video.mp4

Makes sure to use the command prompt as „Administrator“.

Source

BTW: If the video is in portrait you can use the follwing command to convert to landscape:

ffmpeg -i NAME.mp4 -vf "scale=1280:720:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease,pad=1280:720:-1:-1:color=black" video5hoch.mp4

Why working in travel changed for the better

GetATraveltasker is a non-profit initiative to #RESTARTTOURISM

In the last few months the human resources side of the travel industry was strongly dominated by the following topics:

  • Hundreds of people lost their job
  • Working from home became a thing many people like to keep
  • With the restart of travel, many travel companies are short on staff but  have no time/budget to hire and train new staff

This situation causes major issues in our daily business and at the same time, it is very sad knowing so many people desperately looking for a new job in the industry.
Long term I see big opportunities to change the way people work in travel.

As 90% of the tasks can be done remote the hybrid working model makes a lot of sense.

But there is more: Travel is a seasonal business and most travel companies struggling with short peaks and long downs. This is not just inefficient but also boring for the employees – even they have some maintenance tasks to do during low season.

I strongly believe it is time for the travel industry to move on to a more flexible working environment – and to leave the busy and loud basement located offices behind.
A hybrid „Freelancing Experts“ model will help us to build the backbone of the industry.

Get the experts when you need them & let them work on other projects during low season.

This is not new at all. Many industries like IT, health and creatives have adapted this model many years ago. Now it is time for the travel industry to change.

With „Get a Traveltasker“ I like to take a step in this direction and help to #RESTARTTOURISM. The project is non-profit and I hope it will help all those travel champions out there to get found and get hired (again) to build a better travel industry.

This is my Office Gym

During the last weeks in lockdown, I built my own office gym. Even I am looking forward to going back to a real gym I started to love my own place.

I do have a bit a lack of leg training but all the rest is covered using resistance bands, a swiss ball, pilates roll, water tank barbell,  yoga mat, box, two screens and markers (recommended).

Review Winnes Real Time GPS Tracker

After my positive experiences with the Winnes Bicycle Tracker rear light, I had the opportunity to test the bigger brother of the bike tracker:

The Winnes Car Tracker with 3 months stand by.

The car tracker works similar to the bike tracker and can be integrated into the same mobile app. Therefore I have now all my three GPS devices in one place.

The mobile app integration of several Winnes trackers needs to be done manually by the support team via WhatsApp.

The car tracker needs a „pay as you go“ SIM card and connects directly to the mobile network. This means no Bluetooth or WiFi connection is needed and the device works completely independent. As most of the tracker comes with „hidden“ monthly subscriptions the Winnes device can be run with any operator. For me, this is key as the running cost a much cheaper and no contract is needed.

I am using giffgaff and Tesco SIM cards and both of them work perfectly. After one month of testing the car tracker, my credit is still £9.14 (of £ 10).

The Winnes car GPS tracker has a built-in magnet to attach the device to a car. I did not test this yet as I plan to use the tracker when and wherever I need a tracking.

Most of the time the device is just in my backpack – and it feels great even I never lost a backpack ;)
Going to the park and playground with the kids I found it very useful to attach the device to the stroller or at my sons Go-Kart.

And of course, playing „hide and find the device“ is great fun with the kids.

The device is very solid as the main use is to track a car. Therefore it is too big and heavy to put it into the kids pocket. There are smaller devices available for this usage.

After one month of testing, I quite like the device and the idea to use it when and wherever I need a tracking makes a lot of sense for me. The price and the monthly costs are unbeatable.

Saying so the strong build in magnet is a bit of an issue when my mobile phone is in the same bag as the tracker. Also, the mobile app is still „work in progress“ and the interface is not very shiny. An API do services like IFTTT would be great too.

Between the Past and the Future

„I think that you will all agree that we are living in most interesting times (…)“.

Indeed, we are but we are not the first to do so, as the statement above is from 1898. One great place to experience other extraordinary times is the National Railway Museum in York.

A visit there is a valuable lesson in innovation and change within society.

The invention of the steam engine increased travel speeds by 12. This meant that the world became 12 x smaller. But even more importantly, we had machines taking us forwards for the first time. Just imagine the impact this had on our grandparent’s lives.

Looking at those very early trains at the museum, it is fascinating to see that the first coaches look like the horse-drawn carriage. This renewal is a pattern we see almost every day: the old world copied and pasted into the new.

A current example of this is business exhibitions. They have now become “digital” thanks to the pandemic, taking place on Zoom or Teams etc rather than in person. This seems somewhat temporary however, we have not (yet) adapted the idea of digital exhibitions to be the way of the future, as we are still far from recognising the full potential of the digital environment.

The museum highlights the wonderful piece of history that was the steam engine, showing how streamlined steam trains became; the stunning Mallard locomotive achieved the world speed record for steam at 126 miles per hour in 1938. But the rise of the diesel engine saw the beginning of the end for steam, despite diesel locomotives being slower than their steam counterparts when they first came into service.

The change between the two technologies was tremendous and the steam industry did not immediately stop producing “old fashioned” locomotives. The very last steam engine, the Evening Star, was finished in 1960 and spent only 5 years in service. It would be wrong to blame the engineers of the time for continuing to build steam engines, knowing that diesel was the future, however.

How would we handle such a huge change to our daily life?

Steam was the heartbeat of this generation; it was everything… and to think today we know steam only from ironing. This was a disruption to normal service – and a very interesting time indeed!

BTW: Many of the first diesel engines were produced in Switzerland – an industry now long gone and replaced by the service sector.

Simple Holiday Sales in 2021? Yes.

When can we start selling again?“

For those of us in the travel industry, the biggest complication during this crisis has been the uncertainty of when we could return to normal. As we are already nearing the end of the year the answer may no longer be relevant because we are now running out of ideas – and money.

It will not be possible to survive another summer like 2020.

Indeed, restrictions such as those we have seen this year could completely crush the travel industry as we know it today.

This means that we in the industry have no choice but to be optimistic and assume that Covid will be gone thanks to a combination of vaccines, heard immunity and health passports.

Taking this positive outlook as a given, helps us to focus on our “pre-Covid” business questions, such as:

How are people booking? Where are they going? How much are they willing to spend? What products are they buying?

Personally, bringing these questions back to the table feels great because this is what we are good at. We love selling the best possible holidays to our clients and making money by doing so.

With this in mind, let’s consider the potential travel trends for 2021.

We cannot and should not clone our plans for 2019. Even without the effects of Covid to consider, travel is a dynamic industry which reinvents itself every year with or without a global crisis.

From a mass-marketing perspective, I strongly believe it has never been easier to predict the next year’s customer behaviour and travel trends.

2021 will be the year of repeat custom and discounts.

In my opinion, 2021 will not be the year to discover a hidden or unknown island but rather to visit a well-known destination again. „Risk-averse travel“ will dominate, as our customers want to ensure they have only great holidays in the coming year.

This is good news for those destinations with a loyal customer base and even better considering these “returners” do not need a lot of „mass-marketing-influence”. Risk-averse customers tend to make decisions based on past experiences.

“How about we go to Corsica, as we had such a great time there four or five years ago?”

In my opinion, this will be the question that starts most holiday planning discussions in the coming weeks and months.

The second driver for our risk-averse customers, looking to travel in 2021, is discounts. Destinations without a loyal customer base or a unique identifying factor may need to spend a lot in terms of discounts and marketing.

“Beach resort XY for -50%? Sounds like a great deal!”

Large numbers of travellers will expect huge discounts (real or otherwise) for replaceable destinations and their booking choices will be driven by these big offers.

So will repeat-custom and discounts be the only important trends in 2021?

It sounds simple but yes, I believe this will be the case although niche markets will see different behaviour, I’m sure and sustainability will grow in importance.

The good thing about looking to the future through this simplified vision, is that most destinations have no choice but to go for repeat-custom or discounts. Knowing their position in the market will mean sticking to certain target groups.

In my opinion, the crucial point here is that destinations and tour operators do not mix these two approaches. If a destination already has a loyal customer base then it would be wrong to push extreme discounts or invest heavily in mass-marketing. On the other hand, destinations without a loyal customer base should focus on providing clear and strong offers to entice the many customers looking to these in order to travel in the coming year.

Either way, 2021 should be an easy year to plan for when it comes to making decisions regarding marketing strategies, which is good news in the short term!

Personally however, I am already looking forward to a more complex and challenging customer in 2022.

How do you see the situation?
